The Alabama Tombigbee Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging (ATRC Aging) was created in 1973 because of the 1973 amendment to the 1965 Older Americans Act. The purpose of the agency is to plan, coordinate and advocate for the development of a comprehensive service-delivery system capable of meeting short and long-range needs of seniors and persons with disabilities in the region. The ten-county region includes Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Dallas, Marengo, Monroe, Perry, Sumter, Washington, and Wilcox counties.

The ATRC Aging region is a 9,600-square-mile area located in southwest Alabama. Many of our counties fall within the boundaries of what is known as the Black Belt Region of the state, a term that comes from the band of rich black soil that stretches from Texas to Virginia. Our region had a population of 171,750 in 2020, according to the U.S. Census. Of the total regional population of 171,750, those aged 65 or older make up 17.7 % of the population. According to projections from University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research, the over 65 population in the region will increase by 29.11% between 2010 and 2040, a clear reminder of the important need to focus on our senior population to meet their increasing needs. The aging baby boom population is also causing dramatic changes in society and the economy. Elderly people continually use more health resources and experience more limitations on their mobility and ability to care for themselves.

The mission of ATRC Aging is to support senior citizens and persons with disabilities through a system of long-term care options which meets their needs and assures the opportunity to live full and meaningful lives. Our vision is to offer services across the spectrum of care, from independent living to skilled nursing, and to provide person-centered access for older adults and persons with disabilities through local, state and federal partnerships.

HELPING FAMILIES, HELPING EACH OTHER

We are our Area’s Single Source for the Aging and Disabled.

ATRC Aging manages programs funded by the Federal Older Americans Act as well as programs funded by the State of Alabama. Our responsibilities include serving as the area’s Aging & Disabilities Resource Center (ADRC), the entry point for long-term support and services available for seniors and those with disabilities, and facilitating a variety of home and community based services.

HELPING FAMILIES, HELPING EACH OTHER

Our goal is to help you live a quality life independently at home.

ATRC Aging aims to help seniors and the individuals with disabilities live their best life at home by providing access to information, along with assistance and resources to aid in navigating health care and long-term support systems. By providing services in the home, along with coordination of care, we can help you remain healthy in your home and community as long as possible.

We are part of a bigger family
